The Accelerator & The Brake

The Accelerator & The Brake

Created in partnership with whisky writer Dave Broom, this exceptional blend celebrates the uniquely successful partnership of brothers Charles (The Accelerator) and Sandy (The Brake) Gordon, who revolutionised the whisky industry throughout the second half of the 20th Century. Blending two strongly contrasting parcels of whisky together has created a whisky of exceptional character – with an unconventional constitution and a wonderfully improbable harmony.

The Finer Details

Aroma: Mature, great density and weight. Autumnal forest floor, yet with brightness and lift (sunshine through the branches), then some oiliness. In time, dark berry fruit, a touch of leather and what seems to be light smoke and roasted Oolong tea.

Palate: Sweeter than you might expect to start - heavy maple, pecan pie and in time chocolate. Clearly mature with rich black fruits that make it seem akin to an old rum (allspice, molasses) while the oiliness (linseed like)  provides a silky texture, as well as giving superb balance and extending the length. Real energy and power with no sign of fatigue.

Finish: Long. Ripe fruits, then intense spices that mellow (the oils again) into After Eight mints. A brilliant example of blending, with every element working together, giving balance and complexity but in an unusual formulation - the grain dynamic and driving flavour and the malt acting as the quiet partner.
